Also found in: Wikipedia | 0.02 sec. |
Stratford FestivalCanadian summer theatrical festival. The foremost classical repertory theatre in North America, it was founded by Tom Patterson in Stratford, Ontario, in 1953. It includes three permanent theatres: the 220° open-stage Festival Theatre, the Avon Theatre, and the Tom Patterson Theatre, which is reserved for experimental works. The festival features productions of William Shakespeare's plays (Stratford was chosen as its locale because the town's name matched that of Shakespeare's birthplace) but also performs other classic dramatic works. Historic sports arenas and majestic banks are sometimes called temples or cathedrals but Richard Monette's church is the theatre and this year the artistic director of the Stratford Festival is exploring the nature of good and evil through a playbill he calls "Saints and Sinners. Oedipus Rex (1956) is technically a feature film, but it is simply a photographed version of the stage play as directed by Tyrone Guthrie at the Stratford Festival, Ontario. He had an important connection with Canada: he was the first star to appear on the stage of the Stratford Festival, in the title role of Richard III, in 1953, when the festival opened with a tent theatre. |
