Straus, William L. (Louis), Jr. (1900–81) physical anthropologist; born in Baltimore, Md. He taught at Johns Hopkins (1927–66), where he made detailed anatomical and neuromuscular studies of apes and monkeys. He investigated the evolution of erect bipedal posture.
