Strayer, Joseph Reese (1904–87) medievalist, educator; born in Baltimore, Md. Known for his work on the origins of representative government and the beginning of modern administrative systems. he taught longest at Princeton University (1929) where he was named professor emeritus (1973) and chaired the history department (1941–61). President of the Medieval Academy of America (1966–69), a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Scientists, he was the author of numerous books on the medieval period.
