Strong, William D. (Duncan) (1899–1962) archaeologist, anthropologist; born in Portland, Ore. After various academic posts he joined the faculty at Columbia University (1937–62). An authority on South American Indians, he led many North and South American expeditions and discovered the tomb of the war god Ai apaec in Peru (1946). He won the 1955 Viking Fund Medal.
