Stryy (strē), Pol. Stryj, city (1989 pop. 67,000), Ukraine, on the Stryy River (a tributary of the Dniester) and in the Carpathian foothills. It is a major rail junction and a center of the Drohobych oil region. The economy depends on machine building, engineering, and various light industries. An old Ukrainian settlement, Stryy was chartered in 1431. It became a flourishing trade center from the 15th to 16th cent. but declined in the 17th cent. Stryy passed to Austria in 1772, to Poland in 1919, and to Ukraine in 1939. How to thank TFD for its existence?
