Stuck, Hudson

Stuck, Hudson, 1863–1920, American missionary and explorer, b. London, England. He emigrated to the United States in 1885, graduated from the Univ. of the South (1892), and was dean (1894–1904) of the Episcopal cathedral at Dallas, Tex. In 1905 he became archdeacon of the Yukon and spent the remainder of his life in Alaska. With three companions he accomplished the first ascent (1913) of Mt. McKinley, and he traveled extensively in N Alaska. Alaskan geography and Eskimo customs are described in his books, some of which are: The Ascent of Denali (Mount McKinley) (1914), Ten Thousand Miles with a Dog Sled (1914), Voyages on the Yukon and Its Tributaries (1917), and A Winter Circuit of Our Arctic Coast (1920).
