the muscular tissue of the heart myocardium [‚mī·ə′kärd·ē·əm] (histology) The muscular tissue of the heart wall. Myocardium the muscular layer that constitutes most of the heart. It consists of striated muscle tissue made up of a dense aggregation of muscle cells. A functional characteristic of the myocardium is rhythmic, automatic contraction alternating with relaxation, which continues without interruption throughout the life of the organism.
