Stuoka-Gucevičius, Laurynas
Born 1753 in the village of Migonys, in present-day Kupiškis Raion; died Nov. 29 (Dec. 10), 1798, in Vilnius. Lithuanian architect. Stuoka-Gucevičius studied under M. Knakfus at the University of Vilnius (from 1773). He also studied in Rome (1776–77) and Paris (1778–80). He was a professor at the Main School in Vilnius in 1793–94 and again in 1797–98. Stuoka-Gucevičius took part in the uprising led by T. Kościuszko. Stuoka-Gucevičius worked in the classical style. His structures are marked by severity of composition and monumentality of form. Examples are the Vilnius Cathedral (now the Art Gallery, 1777–1801), the Vilnius City Hall (now the Art Museum of the Lithuanian SSR, 1786–99), and the plan for a palace ensemble in Verkiai near Vilnius (after 1780; partly completed).
