Subbotin, Mikhail Fedorovich

Born June 16 (28), 1893, in Ostrolenka, Lomzha (Łomża) Province, now in the Polish People’s Republic; died Dec. 26, 1966, in Leningrad. Soviet astronomer; specialist in celestial mechanics. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946).

Subbotin graduated from Warsaw University in 1914. From 1922 to 1930 he was director of the Tashkent Observatory. In 1930 he became a professor at Leningrad University, and in 1942, director of the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His main works were devoted to determining the orbits of planets and comets and to investigating the general properties of motion in the n-body problem. Subbotin was the author of the three-volume Course in Celestial Mechanics (1933–49).
