subcontractor An individual or organization that is hired by a contractor to do all or some part of the work for another party. For example, a project given to a contractor may be delegated by the contractor to numerous subcontractors. See contractor.subcontractor [¦səb′kän‚trak·tər] (engineering) A manufacturer or organization that receives a contract from a prime contractor for a portion of the work on a project. subcontractor A person or organization who has a direct contract with a prime contractor to perform a portion of the work at the site.
