An important railway junction and an industrial center, it has factories that produce metal goods, fertilizer, furniture, and agricultural machinery. Originally a Roman outpost, Subotica became a royal free city of Hungary until its transfer by the Treaty of Trianon (1920) to the former Yugoslavia. It became part of Yugoslavia's constituent republic of Serbia following World War II. |
