CHAPARRAL LANDSCAPE: If gravel is just too stark for your tastes, try looking to the desert's foothills, where you'll find oak trees and a wild tangle of intertwining shrubs, particularly salvia (otherwise known as sagebrush or sagescrub), sugarbush and creosote. Development has been a major issue in recent disputes over expansions at Booth Creek's Loon Mountain in New Hampshire, at ASC's Sugarbush in Vermont, and the "ski corridor" along Interstate 70 west of Denver, where mountain resort real estate booms have displaced local workers and covered thousands of acres of formerly empty fiats and slopes. Last year, the final Phish concert in Sugarbush, Vermont drew 20,000 people, so band management and promoter David Werlin of Great Northeast Productions decided to look for a larger site to end this year's tour. |
