Sula

Sula 

a group of islands of the Malay Archipelago, situated east of the island of Celebes of Indonesia. Population, 37,000 (1971). The islands cover an area of 48,000 sq km. The main islands are Taliabu and Mangóle. The Sula Islands, composed primarily of shales and granites, with overlying sandstones and limestones, rise to a maximum elevation of 1,157 m, on the island of Taliabu. The climate is equatorial; annual precipitation is 1,700–3,000 mm. The islands have rain forests with a predominance of Dip- terocarpaceae and palms. Rice and maize are cultivated, and copra is produced for export; fishing is also important. The main port is Sanana, on the island of Sanana.


Sula 

a river in Sumy and Poltava oblasts, Ukrainian SSR, with its mouth bordering Cherkassy Oblast; a left tributary of the Dnieper. The Sula is 363 km long and drains an area of 18,500 sq km. Originating on the southwestern slope of the Central Russian Upland, it flows along the Dnieper Lowland and empties into the Kremenchug Reservoir. The river is fed mainly by snow. The mean flow rate 106 km from the mouth is 29 cu m per sec. The Sula freezes in November or December and sometimes as late as March (1952); the ice breaks up in March or the first half of April. The lower course is navigable. The cities of Romny and Lubny are situated on the Sula.


Sula 

a river in Arkhangel’sk Oblast, RSFSR, partially along the border of the Komi ASSR; a left tributary of the Pechora. The Sula is 353 km long and drains an area of 10,400 sq km. It rises in the Kosminskii Kamen’ upland (Timan Ridge). It is fed by snow and rain. There is high water in May and June, and flash floods occur in the summer. The mean flow rate 101 km from the mouth is approximately 92 cu m per sec. The river freezes in October or November, and the ice breaks up in May or early June.


Sula 

a river in Arkhangel’sk Oblast, RSFSR; a right tributary of the Mezen’. The Sula is 221 km long and drains an area of 2,210 sq km. It originates in the Kosminskii Kamen’ upland (Timan Ridge). It is fed primarily by snow. There is high water in May and June. The mean flow rate 79 km from the mouth is approximately 13 cu m per sec. The river freezes in October, and the ice breaks up in May.
