Soap, Sulfate
a by-product in the production of cellulose by the sulfate method. Sulfate soap is formed during the boiling of pitchy cedar or pine wood in an alkali solution. It contains up to 55 percent fatty and resin acids. Sulfate soap is converted into tall oil, which is used in the paint and varnish industry and in the production of industrial surface-active agents.
