(organic chemistry)
R2SO A compound with the group =SO; derived from oxidation of sulfides, the proportion of oxidant, such as hydrogen peroxide, and temperature being set to avoid excessive oxidation; an example is dimethyl sulfoxide, (CH3)2SO.
Sulfoxide 

any organosulfur compound containing a

group bonded to two organic radicals.

Sulfoxides are colorless viscous liquids or crystalline substances; for example, dimethyl sulfoxide, (CH3)2SO, melts at 18.4°C and boils at 189°C. Sulfoxides are soluble in alcohol and ether; the lower members of the homologous series are also soluble in water. With strong acids sulfoxides form saltlike adducts, or addition products, such as R2SO·HCl. Sulfoxides are usually obtained by the oxidation of organic sulfides, or thioethers. Dimethyl sulfoxide is used as a solvent. Sulfoxides were discovered by A. M. Zaitsev in 1886.
