Sullivan, James (1744–1808) legal scholar; born in Berwick, District of Maine. He was initially King's counsel for York County in Maine but took an active role in support of the American Revolution. For many years he was a prominent Boston lawyer and Massachusetts statesman; he served on the state supreme court (1776), as state attorney general (1790–1807), and as governor (1807–08).
