In northeastern OH, south of Cleveland; organized Mar 3, 1840 from Portage, Medina, and Stark counties. Name Origin: From the Greek 'summit,' because the highest point on the Ohio Canal is at the county seat, Akron.

Pop 2005: 546,604. State rank: 5. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.70%; 1990-2000 5.40%. Pop 2000: 542,899 (White 83.00%; Black or African American 13.20%; Hispanic or Latino 0.90%; Asian 1.40%; Other 1.90%). Foreign born: 3.30%. Median age: 37.20.
