On the central northern border of TN, northeast of Nashville; organized Nov 18, 1786 (prior to statehood) from Davidson County (NC), becoming part of the Territory South of the River Ohio (popularly called the Southwest Territory) from its creation in May 1790 until it became the state of TN in 1796. Name Origin: For Gen. Jethro Sumner (1733-85), officer in the Revolutionary War who was active in promoting TN statehood.
