On the central northern border of TN, northeast of Nashville; organized Nov 18, 1786 (prior to statehood) from Davidson County (NC), becoming part of the Territory South of the River Ohio (popularly called the Southwest Territory) from its creation in May 1790 until it became the state of TN in 1796. Name Origin: For Gen. Jethro Sumner (1733-85), officer in the Revolutionary War who was active in promoting TN statehood.

Area (sq mi): 543.12 (land 529.30; water 13.81). Pop per sq mi: 274.00.
Pop 2005: 145,009. State rank: 9. Pop change: 2000-20005 11.20%; 1990-2000 26.30%. Pop 2000: 130,449 (White 90.60%; Black or African American 5.80%; Hispanic or Latino 1.80%; Asian 0.70%; Other 2.10%). Foreign born: 2.40%. Median age: 36.10.

    On the central southern border of KS, south of Wichita; organized Feb 26, 1867 from Cowley County. Name Origin: For Charles Sumner (1811-74), a founder (1848) of the Free-Soil Party and U.S. senator from MA (1851-74); he was physically beaten on the floor of the Senate for his anti-slavery stand.
