In west-central GA, north of Albany; organized Dec 26, 1831 from Lee County. Name Origin: For Gen. Thomas Sumter (1734-1832), American Revolutionary officer nicknamed the "Gamecock of the Revolution," U.S. representative from GA (1789-93; 1797-1801), and U.S. senator (1801-10).
