Scientists are exploring whether a 10- to 12-foot-high sunflower plant found on the Newhall Ranch site in September is the extinct Los Angeles sunflower, last seen more than 60 years ago, or if it's one of two others in the giant sunflower family.
It is part of the giant sunflower family and grows in mossy, wetland areas.
They include hawkweed, a fuzzy-leaf plant in the sunflower family, and the endangered Santa Susana tarweed.
