Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument

Preserve, north-central Arizona, U.S. Established in 1930, the monument covers 5 sq mi (13 sq km) and contains the brilliant-hued cinder cone of an extinct volcano that erupted c. 1064. It rises 1,000 ft (300 m) and has a crater 400 ft (120 m) deep and 1,280 ft (390 m) in diameter. The tract contains numerous lava flows, fumaroles, and lava beds.

Size: 3,040 acres.
Established: Proclaimed on May 26, 1930; transferred from Forest Service on August 10, 1933.
Location: From Flagstaff, Arizona, take US 89 north 12 miles, then right on Sunset Crater - Wupatki Loop Rd. for 2 miles to park visitor center.
Facilities: Campground (é), picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities: Camping, hiking, interpretive programs.
Special Features: This volcanic cinder cone with summit crater was formed by a series of eruptions sometime between AD 1040 and 1100. Its upper part is colored as if by a sunset.
