An abrasive reed horn called the suona takes the lead in several scenes, supported by a range of traditional percussion instruments and an acrobatic troupe from China.
But the strings are zhangu and gehu, rather than violins; the woodwind are guan and the brass suona.
Most of these bear a distant resemblance to their western cousins - the reedy suona is a form of Chinese saxophone, while the four-stringed gehu looks like a cross between a cello and an oil drum - yet the sound they produce is out of this world.
