S-VHS
(Super-VHS) A VHS recording and playback system that increased resolution from 240 to 400 lines and used a higher-quality cassette. S-VHS introduced the S-video interface, which separated the luma from the color (see S-video).

Introduced in the mid-1980s, there is little noticeable difference between VHS and S-VHS when taping programs off-the-air. However, if the source material is higher quality (camcorder, satellite, etc.), S-VHS recordings are visibly superior. S-VHS VCRs also play regular VHS tapes, and S-VHS-ET (Expansion Technology) machines are able to record S-VHS content on regular VHS tapes. See D9.

It can also record and play back any VHS video tape, including playback of Super VHS, although it will not record at the latter's high resolution and playback of materials recorded on S-VHS units will also not have that format's full resolution.
In terms of lines of horizontal resolution, VHS and 8mm formats deliver 240 horizontally placed lines; super VHS and Hi 8 take it to 400+ lines, but digital video delivers 500 lines eclipsing even video laser disks in image quality.
Today, image resolution as high as 400 television lines can be achieved with standard VHS tape and even better color resolution is achievable with Super VHS (S-VHS) tape.
