suppressor [sə′presĀ·ər] (electricity) In general, a device used to reduce or eliminate noise or other signals that interfere with the operation of a communication system, usually at the noise source. Specifically, a resistor used in series with a spark plug or distributor of an automobile engine or other internal combustion engine to suppress spark noise that might otherwise interfere with radio reception. (electronics) (spectroscopy) In an analytical procedure, a substance added to the analyte to reduce the extraneous emission, absorption, or light scattering caused by the presence of an impurity.
