surface-barrier transistor [′sər·fəs ¦bar·ē·ər tran′zis·tər] (electronics) A transistor in which the emitter and collector are formed on opposite sides of a semiconductor wafer, usually made ofn-type germanium, by training two jets of electrolyte against its opposite surfaces to etch and then electroplate the surfaces.
