Surkhab

Surkhab 

(in its lower course, Kunduz), a river in Afghanistan; a left tributary of the Amu Darya. The Surkhab measures 420 km in length and drains an area of 31,300 sq km. It originates in the Baba Range and intersects the northern spurs of the Hindu Kush, forming deep ravines. In its lower course it flows onto a plain, where it divides into branches. The river is fed primarily by snow. High water is in spring and summer. The mean flow rate is approximately 120 cu m per sec. The river is used for irrigation. The Pul-i-Khurmi Hydroelectric Power Plant is situated on the Surkhab.
