Sorrento

Sorrento (sōr-rān`tō), town (1991 pop. 16,459), Campania, S Italy, on the Sorrento Peninsula, which separates the Bay of Naples from the Gulf of Salerno. Beautifully situated, it is a tourist center and a summer resort.
Sorrento
a port in SW Italy, in Campania on a mountainous peninsula between the Bay of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno: a resort since Roman times. Pop.: 16 536 (2001)

Sorrento 

a city in Italy, in Naples Province, Campania. Port on the peninsula of Sorrento, on the southern shore of the Bay of Naples. Population, 14,400 (1968). Industry includes small-scale textile manufacturing and fishing. In the surrounding regions fruits and wine grapes are grown. Sorrento is a summer health resort and tourist center.

Sorrento was the home of the Italian poet Torquato Tasso. M. Gorky also lived here from 1924 to 1928.

On the other side of the Bay of Naples, Surrentum was also a favorite haunt of Roman nobles, who built a number of villas at panoramic locations along the coast.
