Suslin, Mikhail

    0.01 sec.
Suslin, Mikhail Iakovlevich

Born Nov. 3 (15), 1894, in the village of Krasavka, now in Saratov Oblast; died 1919. Russian mathematician.

Suslin was one of the founders of descriptive set theory. His principal contributions were the establishment of the existence of A-sets that are not Borel sets and the construction of a substantial part of the theory of A-sets (seeSET THEORY). Suslin published, in 1917, only a single brief article on his discoveries. The discoveries were set forth in such works as F. Hausdorff’s Fundamentals of Set Theory (2nd ed., 1927) and N. N. Luzin’s Lectures on Analytic Sets and Their Applications (1930).
