This is followed by Shays' Rebellion in January 1787; the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill on May 12 1848; the Battle of Antietam beginning on September 17, 1862; the infamous Homestead Strike in July 1892; President McKinley's assassination on September 6, 1901; the Scopes monkey trial in 1925; Elvis Presley's appearance on Ed Sullivan's television show; and, finally, the murder of three civil rights activists on June 21, 1964. Her truck landed about 50 feet from the locally famous tree under which, legend has it, a napping cattle rancher discovered the state's first gold in 1842 - nearly six years before the strike at Sutter's Mill. After gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill on the American River north of Sacramento in 1849, the area saw its first big changes. |
