Coconut oil and soap are manufactured; sugar, copra, gold, and tropical fruits are exported. Tourism is an important industry. The main campus of the Fiji School of Medicine and a campus of the Univ. of the South Pacific are there. Suva became the capital of Fiji in 1882. During World War II it was an important Allied airbase. SuvaSeaport, (pop., 2003 est.: urban area, 210,472), capital of Fiji. Founded in 1849, it was made a city in 1952; it is now one of the largest urban centres in the South Pacific Ocean. With its fine harbour, Suva is Fiji's chief port and commercial centre and the site of educational and cultural institutions. In September 1940 the officer in charge on Gardner, Gerald Gallagher, radioed his superiors in Suva, Fiji, that the skull and partial skeleton of a castaway had been discovered in a remote area of the island, and in a place where it was unlikely to have been seen by an air search.
