Madame Sousatzka was made into a 1988 movie starring Shirley MacLaine, and there are at least five film versions of Trilby, the best being the 1931 Svengali, starring John Barrymore and Marian Marsh. The New Urbanist Svengalis have now seduced Louisiana's hapless governor and been given the keys to the state. Murray hit town with Stanley Crouch, then a militant poet and drummer, but now known as Wynton Marsalis's intellectual svengali and the preeminent jazz critic. |
