Miletić, Svetozar 

Born Feb. 22, 1826, in Mošorin; died Feb. 4, 1901, in Vršac. Serbian political and social figure.

Miletić attended the faculty of law of Budapest University. In 1848 he joined the radical wing of the political movement of the Serbian bourgeoisie in Vojvodina. In 1860 he became a contributor to the newspaper Srpski dnevnik, and in 1864 was first elected a deputy to the Council of the Serbian Orthodox Church (sabor). In 1865, Miletić was elected to the Hungarian and Croatian diets. In 1866 he founded the newspaper Zastava (The Banner), which became the main organ of the Liberal Party of Vojvodina, established by Miletić in 1869. Miletić was subjected to persecution by the Hungarian authorities on a number of occasions for his opposition to their regime of national oppression. He gave up political activity in the 1880’s.
