Svishchev, Georgii Petrovich 

Born Dec. 11 (24), 1912, in Leningrad. Soviet scientist; specialist in aviation and mechanics. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966); Hero of Socialist Labor (1957). Member of the CPSU since 1945.

After graduating from the Moscow Institute of Dirigible Construction in 1935, Svishchev worked in a design bureau for dirigible construction. From 1940 to 1954 he worked in the N. E. Zhukovskii Central Aerohydrodynamics Institute, where he became deputy director in 1950. From 1954 to 1967 he was head of the P. I. Baranov Central Institute of Aircraft Engine Construction. In 1967 he became head of the Central Aerohydrodynamics Institute.

Svishchev’s principal works deal with the aerodynamics of aircraft and engine installations. Svishchev has been awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1946 and 1952); two Orders of Lenin, four other orders, and various medals.
