Svobodnyi 

(until 1924, Alekseevsk), a city under oblast jurisdiction and administrative center ofSvobodnyi Raion, Amur Oblast, RSFSR. Railroad station 180 km north of Blagoveshchensk. Port on the right bank of the Zeia River, a tributary of the Amur. Population, 68,000 (1975; 44,000 in 1939; 56,000 in 1959). Svobodnyi is a base for transshipment of freight from railroad to ships. It has a plant for the repair of railroad cars, the Avtozapachast’ plant (which produces spare parts for automobiles), a shipyard, plants for the production of structural members and high-voltage equipment, a mechanized foundry, and a clothing factory. The city also has an evening mechanical tech-nicum, a railroad-transportation technicum, a cooperative technicum, and a medical school.


Svobodnyi 

an urban-type settlement in Bazarnyi Karabulak Raion, Saratov Oblast, RSFSR. Svobodnyi has a railroad station (Karabulak) on the Atkarsk-Vol’sk line. It has a poultry-raising plant and a sovkhoz for fattening cattle and hogs. A grain elevator is under construction (1975).
