Swadeshi Movement

(Sanskrit svadesin, native, national), one of the manifestations of the anti-imperialist movement in India, aimed at encouraging the development of national industry. The swadeshi movement emerged in the last quarter of the 19th century; its founders included M. G. Ranade. The Indian national bourgeoisie, which had suffered greatly from the competition of British goods, utilized the swadeshi movement in its struggle to regain the Indian market. In 1906 swadeshi was proclaimed at the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress as one of the party’s principal programmatic demands. In the periods 1905–07 and 1918–22 and in 1930, the swadeshi movement took the form of an Indian boycott of British goods.
