Swartswood State Park Location: 5 miles west of Newton and US Route 206 in Sussex County. Facilities: 65 tent and trailer campsites, flush toilets, showers, laundry facilities, 3 group camping sites, 6 yurts, picnic areas, picnic shelters, group picnic area, playground, food concession, hiking trails, multi-use trail (é), bathhouse, boat launch, boat and canoe rentals, bird observation facility. Activities: Camping, boating (electric motors only), canoeing, sailing, fishing, swimming, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, mountain biking, inline skating, hunting, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice skating, ice fishing, sledding, bird watching, nature programs (seasonal). Special Features: Established in 1914, Swartswood was New Jersey's first state park and is known for its tranquil surroundings and great fishing. Both Little Swartswood and Swartswood Lake have been the focus of water quality improvement efforts, including invasive aquatic weed control and watershed protection.
