Swayne, Noah Haynes

Swayne, Noah Haynes (1804–84) Supreme Court justice; born in Frederick County, Va. His abolitionism prompted a move from Virginia to Ohio, where he served as U.S. district attorney (1830–39). He was practicing law privately when President Lincoln named him to the U.S. Supreme Court (1863–81).
