In central TX panhandle, south of Amarillo; organized Aug 21, 1876 from Bexar County. Name Origin: For James Gibson Swisher (1795-1864), Republic of TX soldier and a signer of the TX Declaration of Independence (1836).

Area (sq mi): 900.68 (land 900.43; water 0.25). Pop per sq mi: 8.70.
Pop 2005: 7,828. State rank: 179. Pop change: 2000-20005 -6.60%; 1990-2000 3.00%. Pop 2000: 8,378 (White 57.90%; Black or African American 5.80%; Hispanic or Latino 35.20%; Asian 0.20%; Other 22.20%). Foreign born: 4.90%. Median age: 34.60.
Income 2000: per capita $14,326; median household $29,846; Pop below poverty level: 17.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $24,683-$28,611.
