The sycamore maple, or mock plane (Acer pseudoplatanus), is sometimes also called simply sycamore. The sycamore grows in East Africa, where it is cultivated for its edible fruit. The tree has hard wood. Sometimes the name “sycamore” is used to designate the sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) and the planer tree (Planera aquatica), a North American tree of the family Ulmaceae. Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus), also sycamore maple, a slender maple tree with brownish gray bark. The sycamore reaches 40 m in height and more than 2 m in diameter. The leaves are usually five-lobed. The greenish yellow flowers are in a long many-flowered spicate raceme that droops at the end. The sycamore is found in Western Europe and on the northern coast of Asia Minor. In the USSR it occurs in the southwestern European section, in Ciscaucasia, and in western Transcaucasia. The tree grows mainly in mountainous forests, usually singly or in small groups. In the Caucasus the sycamore can grow at elevations to 1,800 m above sea level.
