Sykes, Lynn Ray (1937– ) seismologist; born in Pittsburgh, Pa. He was a researcher and professor at the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory, Columbia University (1962). He made major contributions to the seismic investigation of underground nuclear testing, and the relationship of earthquakes to tectonic movement.
