Syktyvkar, University of 

(full name, Fiftieth Anniversary of the USSR Syktyvkar University), a university founded in 1972 in Syktyvkar. As of 1975, the university had departments of philology (Russian and Komi language and literature) and history, chemistry and biology, physics and mathematics, and economics. There is also a correspondence division and a preparatory division for certain categories of entering students.

Facilities at the university, which has 16 subdepartments, include a computer center, botanical garden, zoological museum, and biology station. The library contains approximately 200,000 volumes. Enrollment in 1975 was approximately 2,000, with the teaching staff numbering 175, including eight professors and doctors of sciences and 72 docents and candidates of sciences. The programs of study at the university give maximum attention to the special features of the North’s economic and cultural development.
