synchrotron: see particle accelerator particle accelerator, apparatus used in nuclear physics to produce beams of energetic charged particles and to direct them against various targets. Such machines, popularly called atom smashers, are needed to observe objects as small as the atomic nucleus in studies

The strength of the magnetic field increases as the particle's momentum increases. An alternating electric field in synchrony with the orbital frequency of the particle produces acceleration. Synchrotrons are named according to the particles they accelerate. The Tevatron, a proton synchrotron at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois, U.S., produces the highest particle energies achieved so far. synchrotron [′siŋ·krə‚trän] (nucleonics) A device for accelerating electrons or protons in closed orbits in which the frequency of the accelerating voltage is varied (or held constant in the case of electrons) and the strength of the magnetic field is varied so as to keep the orbit radius constant. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] The Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO) has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Canadian Light Source (CLS), the national synchotron research facility-located at the University of Saskatchewan. General topics include actinide physics, with comparative studies on actinide metals, nitrides and hydrides, plutonium and uranium metallurgy, including long-term studies on aging behaviors, and actinide chemistry, including structural characteristics of a plutonium sequestering agent complex by synchotron x-ray diffraction. |
