Synchronous Telegraph
a telegraph characterized by the continuous operation of the sending and receiving apparatus regardless of whether information is being transmitted. A distinction is made between simplex and multiplex synchronous telegraphs (seeMULTIPLEX TELEGRAPHY). Because of its cumbersomeness and difficulty of operation, synchronous telegraph apparatus was supplanted in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s by start-stop apparatus.
