synchronous converter [′siŋ·krə·nəs kən′vərd·ər] (electricity) A converter in which motor and generator windings are combined on one armature and excited by one magnetic field; normally used to change alternating to direct current. Also known as converter; electric converter. Synchronous converter A synchronous machine used to convert alternating current (ac) to direct current (dc), or vice versa. The ac-to-dc converter has been superseded by the mercury arc rectifier (for reasons of efficiency, lower maintenance costs, and less trouble) or by motor-generator sets. Converters are no longer manufactured, but there are converters still in use. See Direct-current generator, Synchronous motor How to thank TFD for its existence? The new synchronous converter device requires only input and output capacitors plus an output inductor to create a complete synchronous buck converter. National's LM2655 is the newest member of a family of synchronous converters designed for low-voltage systems and is available in fixed 3. In a dc-to-dc synchronous converter with a 16-A output and a Vout of 2V, the GFB70N03 delivers 80% efficiency and 90% at 3A output. |
