a condensation or brief review of a subject; summary

synopsis [sə′näp·səs]
(systematics)
In taxonomy, a brief summary of current knowledge about a taxon.

Synopsis 

(1) A collection of various facts, materials, and articles on some issue, most often arranged chronologically. The term is applied mainly to historical works.

(2) In Russian, a term used in theological writings to designate a collection of excerpts of sermons, exegeses of the Scriptures, and other works by ecclesiastical writers; also, a brief account of such texts.
