(materials)
A complex mixture of hydrocarbons that are somewhat similar to petroleum and are obtained from coal, synthesis gas, or oil shale and tar sands. Also known as syncrude.

Once separated from the sand, the bitumen is still a low-grade, heavy fossil fuel that must undergo an energy-intensive process to upgrade it into a synthetic crude oil more like conventional crude, either by adding hydrogen or removing carbon.
The Jose refinery centre, called central upgrading zone, houses three other such ventures in which PDVSA works with BP, ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips and Chevron to upgrade synthetic crude oils.
There are already four existing heavy oil strategic associations producing synthetic crude oil, and multinationals involved in them include ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Total, Chevron and Statoil.
