A minicomputer from IBM. Introduced in 1983, earlier System/34 applications had to be recompiled to run in the System/36. The typical system supported from a handful to a couple dozen terminals. System/36 applications had to be recompiled to run on the AS/400. See System/38.

First of all, IBM has also stopped charging for various System/36 system programs, which can be run on the AS/400 either alone or alongside OS/400 V4; in fact, up to three copies of SSP 7.
The first decision was whether to upgrade the System/36 with more user applications or move to a PC-based network so word processing, spreadsheet and other applications could be run.
On the positive side of this coin is the article by Brian Jeffery in the March 17, 1992 Midrange Systems "Fated Attractions," subtitled "As System/36 Users Contemplate Migration Affairs, the RS-6000 could prove to be irresistible.
