Szönyi, István
Born Jan. 17, 1894, in Újpest; died Aug. 30, 1960, in Zebegèny, near Budapest. Hungarian painter and graphic artist. Szönyi studied under K. Ferenczy at the Budapest Academy of Arts from 1914 to 1922; he became a professor at the academy in 1938. He painted lyrical landscapes and genre pictures, including the works On a Mountain Peak (1925) and The Boatman (1951), both of which are housed in the Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest. He also painted murals for various buildings, including the main post office in Budapest (1956). Szönyi was awarded the Kossuth Prize in 1949. REFERENCESzönyi István gyüjteményes kiállitása.
