Szent-Gyorgyi, Albert von

Szent-Gyorgyi, Albert von (äl`bĕrt fən sĕnt'-dyör`dyĭ), 1893–1986, American biochemist, b. Hungary, M.D. Univ. of Budapest, 1917; Ph.D. Cambridge, 1927. After teaching at the universities of Szeged and Budapest, he came to the United States in 1947 and assumed the post of director of research at the Institute of Muscle Research, Marine Biological Laboratories, Woods Hole, Mass. He was naturalized in 1955. He received the 1937 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his studies of biological oxidations and for discovering ascorbic acid in adrenal glands. His later researches were chiefly on muscle chemistry. His writings include On Oxidation, Fermentation, Vitamins, Health, and Disease (1939), Chemistry of Muscular Contraction (1947, rev. ed. 1951), Bioenergetics (1957), and Introduction to a Submolecular Biology (1960).
